Whispers in the Fog / Unreal Engine 5

Whispers in the Fog is a personal psychological horror project created in Unreal Engine 5, focused on atmosphere, environmental storytelling, lighting, and immersive first-person presentation.

For this latest environment, I rebuilt the visual direction around an abandoned town surrounded by dense forest, persistent rain, and heavy fog. The goal was to create a grounded, oppressive atmosphere where lighting and environmental movement guide the player naturally through the space.

The environment was built using a PCG-based workflow for much of the forest and world dressing, allowing vegetation, trees, ground elements, and environmental variation to be iterated quickly while keeping the composition art-directed.

Lighting, weather, rain, wind, clouds, and atmospheric conditions were developed using Ultra Dynamic Sky (UDS) together with custom fog and lighting adjustments to control depth, visibility, silhouettes, and separation between foreground, midground, and background.

The soundscape also plays an important role in the experience. Unreal Engine MetaSounds were used to build and control several environmental and gameplay audio systems, including spatial ambience, environmental creaks, interactive sounds, and layered horror elements.
